Your bathroom is one of the most utilised rooms in a home, but it also tends to be the smallest. Due to size constraints, it's important that your bathroom be both functional and highly attractive, creating the illusion of a larger area. Making the best use of the available space can be quite tricky, but with a few simple tips, your bathroom can be transformed from a disorderly mess into a warm, inviting area!
Eliminate Clutter!
Numerous toiletries taking up all available shelf space will make the bathroom look even smaller than it already is. While everyday essentials should be kept within easy reach, toiletries that aren't used on a daily basis need to be neatly stored away. A floor to ceiling cabinet featuring a combination of lower doors and open shelving is both functional and attractive.
Decorative items, such as wicker baskets, glass canisters and towels will look lovely on the open shelves, whereas cleaning supplies, personal items and a laundry basket can be stored behind closed doors. Free up valuable floor space with an elegant pedestal or wall mounted sink, as opposed to a traditional vanity which can appear rather bulky. Rather than a single ceiling light, brighten up the bathroom with wall sconces and recessed can lighting.
Make the Most of Light and Space
Add an illusion of space with an elegant mirror. A large mirror will reflect the light, making your bathroom seem much larger. Use a glass shower enclosure which can really open up the space, allowing you to see the entire length of the room. Alternatively a stylish shower curtain can inject a splash of personality and interest into the room and can be drawn to the side when not in use to open up the space further.
Whenever possible, try to take advantage of natural light by keeping window coverings to a minimum. A perfect solution would be to use frosted glass in a bathroom window; if you have clear glass, a sheer fabric covering the lower half of your window will offer privacy while allowing the natural light to flood through. Following this theme, the use of glass shelving rather than wood is certainly worth considering, as it gives the impression of almost 'floating', rather than looking bulky, and cutting into the wall.
Think About Colour
Be careful when using colour. Sticking with white bathroom fittings and a pale colour on the walls will give a perception of depth, making the space seem larger. Whatever colour you choose on the walls, always paint the ceiling white, as this will draw the eye upwards, adding an airy feel. If you have a low ceiling, vertical striped wallpaper in a pale colour will make it appear higher. Visual interest can be created with the addition of a vibrant piece of artwork, and brightly coloured accessories and linens, but avoid overly busy or large patterns.
By using these tips, and injecting a little bit of your personality into your bathroom design, you will be able to create a space that not only looks and feels larger, but is a joy to spend time in!
